From youth workers to foster carers
Joel and Katie both came into fostering through their work in the sector, where they were already building relationships with young people in care.
Their first experience came through emergency respite, when they cared for a young person for just over four weeks. That experience showed them the impact a safe, stable home can have.
The idea resurfaced again through Joel’s youth work, where he formed a close bond with a young person. What started as hesitation slowly became a real consideration.
They began with respite weekends, easing the young person into their home and routines.
From there, they knew they could take the next step.
Joel and Katie are now preparing to take on a full-time placement.
For them, a common misconception is that you need to feel fully ready. In reality, it’s about having the right support around you.
